Eden Camp, Malton, North Yorkshire
Eden Camp is now a Museum. It had previously been a POW Camp (Camp No. 83). It started in 1942 when the first Italian POWs arrived. Over time the camp expanded to 45 huts across eight acres. Once completed 1150 Prisoners were housed at any one time at the camp. Which saw use housing both German and Italian Prisoners Of War (rather than internees).
Today it is a Museum dedicated to social history from 1914 onwards. But its main emphasis is on the Second World War. It is impressive that so much of the camp remains standing for our visiting pleasure. And while you get the feel of what it would have been like to be a POW back then, the main emphasis of the museum is to cover all aspects of World War Two with every hut given a specific theme. Each theme is explored in great detail in the information, artefacts and reconstructions.
