Ramsbottom Heritage Gallery
Ramsbottom’s Response - World War One Exhibition by Ramsbottom Heritage Society.
World War I disrupted the lives of every resident of Ramsbottom in unexpected and dramatic ways.
This exhibition shows how Ramsbottom men, some underage, left the mills and buses to fight and a woman followed her husband to war, to nurse and die in Egypt. Women and children at home raised money, packed parcels for the troops, looked after Belgian refugees and nursed the wounded soldiers returning from war.
A Zeppelin raid on the town killed a thrush, whose preserved body is in the exhibition and Britain’s WW1 military planes, the battle of the Somme and life in the trenches are shown on film.
Everyone from Ramsbottom responded with courage and resourcefulness and this exhibition tells their story.
The exhibition opened on June 8th 2014 and run to two years. The exhibition is in the Heritage Gallery upstairs in Ramsbottom Library.

Chorley Remembers Experience,

Contains artefacts, photographs and information covering first and second world war and the huge munitions factory at ROF Chorley.
Highlights include the WW1 trench experience and the interactive videos of veterans testimony.

Lancashire Infantry Museum,
Fulwood, Preston

This museum covers the history of Lancashire’s three infantry regiments. Beginning with the raising of Lord Castleton’s Regiment of Foot in 1689, through the several regimental amalgamations to creation of the present day Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment. The museum also houses artifacts from Lancashire’s Militia, Rifle Volunteers, Territorial Army, Home Guard and Cadet Units. As well as the uniforms, medals, weapons and photographs the collection includes ceramics and art works.

Imperial War Museum North,

The main exhibition space has a timeline of conflicts that Britain and the Commonwealth have been involved in since the First World War. It features how the lives of men and women have been changed by war, and the science and technology of war. The Big Picture Show is an immersive experience of moving and still pictures, highlighting people’s experience of war.

Museum of Lancashire, Preston

Two regiments are displayed here, the 14th / 20th King’s Hussars and the Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry.
There is a large reconstruction of a World War 1 trench system and a World War Two Home Front display. Other displays include the efforts to camouflage factories during the second world war.

King’s Own Royal Regiment Museum,
housed in Lancaster City Museum, Lancaster

Displays about the King’s Own Royal Regiment from 1680 to the present day. Topics covered include the Napoleonic and Crimean Wars, and both World Wars. Highlights include five of the regiment’s Victoria Crosses.

Museum of the Manchester Regiment,
Ashton Town Hall, Ashton Under Lyne

The Museum tells the story of the Manchester Regiment. It details two hundred years of history from 1756 until 1958, and then right up to date as part of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment.
Highlights include a First World War trench, over two thousand medals, unique films of 1930s Palestine and a recreation of a barracks room from Ladysmith Barracks in Ashton.

This heritage centre has lots of different displays and is highly recommended. There are lots of WW1 and WW2 related exhibits. The World War Two exhibit has many local artefacts which show the realities of life in World War Two. There is also a lot more on offer here than WW1 & WW2 exhibits. There is a great deal of archive material available for research purposes and books, CDs and DVDs available to buy.
And It is FREE! Staffed by knowledgeable local members of the Society.
