Stockport Air Raid Shelters
Stockport used the red sandstone it was built on as a novel way to provide shelter from air raids. Tunnels were specially cut into the rock to provide shelter for thousands of people. Some of these tunnels are open as part of a Museum and a visit is highly recommended. It can be a bit daunting for very young children - but the staff try their best to make it an enjoyable experience for them. Still, you should be aware that the tunnels can be quite discomforting even to adults - if you don't like being in enclosed spaces/underground/etc...
Right: The official plaque on the wall says "600 persons", but on the sandbags in white paint it says "4000 persons".
Below: Every modern comfort provided - the slightly unusual toilet facilities - we guess they would have had curtains.
There are only a small amount of the original tunnels accessible. Special private tours of further tunnels are available.
